It is 2012 and PCI-SIG has taken a surprising turn on computer manufacturers that should be ringing alarm bells if anyone is thinking of investing in a HPC solution right now.
In December of 2011 PCI-SIG announced the new standards for PCI-E Gen 3.0, this standard moves the current bandwidth of the Gen 2.0 from 5.0GT/s to 8.0 GT/s. The design must meet a set of standards as did the Gen 2.0 with backward compatibility so that the clock speeds used can switch down accordingly to the type or supported add in card used in the system.

AMD released a new series of processors which out of the box uses the new 1600mhz DDR3 memory. Unlike Intel's DP and UP solutions these processors have Quad channel memory arch and when optimized correctly with a few professional tweaks performed by CooperTronix, SuperMicro, Tyan and so on we are able to almost double the memory bandwidth of 1600mhz DDR3, thats twice the standard bandwidth of the standard for this memory speed.
Intel on the other hand have released there 7500 series that is now know as the second gen E7-8800 MP. These chips have Quad memory with some added RISC arch enhancements. Intel's offering in these chips are about the only contender to the memory performance in the HPC sector. Although Intel core speed seems to remain faster than AMD it is unclear weather this is due to software optimization rather than the actual core speed.
